About Daniel Barnes

Daniel Barnes is a drummer, composer and producer. Daniel was born into a musical family who lived in the central hub of downtown Toronto, Canada. His father was the renowned classical composer Milton Barnes and his brother Micah is a singer/songwriter best known for his work with The Nylons. Mother Lilly is a published author and scriptwriter for radio and television. At age16 Artie began regular professional work with The Micah Barnes Trio. Since then he has performed and recorded with the top echelon of Canadian jazz artists including Holly Cole, Joe Sealy, Jane Bunnett, Hilario Duran, Molly Johnson, Richard Underhill, Jake Langley and many more. Daniel's drumming contributed to Joe Sealy's JUNO award in 1996 for best contemporary jazz CD and Underhill's nomination for the same in 2006. Daniel wrote music and played drums for The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band for a decade through 2 CD's and touring. He toured internationally throughout the 1990's with Ethiopian pop star Aster Aweke recording several CDs and a live concert video in this African urban dance music genre. In 2003 Daniel released his debut CD "Culmination" and in 2007 his sophomore "Classic Beauties". Both have garnered favorable press and considerable radio airplay. The Daniel Barnes Quartet has appeared at major Canadian jazz festivals. Daniel was nominated Drummer of the Year at the 2003 and 2007 National Jazz Awards of Canada. Daniel has perfomed on over 40 recordings, on TV and in film.
