The event is conducted during the first weekend in October in various locations along St Clair Ave West, between Bathurst to Oakwood, centering on Christie and the Wychwood Carbarns, just south of St Clair.

This volunteer effort was initiated by local artists Eric David and Ben D'Cunha with support from Councillor Mihevc and others. In 2004, ART WALK was supported by the Wychwood Heights and Hillcrest Village BIAs (Business Improvement Areas) and Councillor Mihevc's office as well as the City of Toronto, the Toronto Arts Council, UrbanArts and MyStClair.com.
